I failed miserably on my Breeders' Cup prep, but honestly there was part of me that had also been out of the loop since the summer due to my mom's surgeries and recovery (she is now fine). The good news is I was able to watch almost all of the races (I missed the Juvenile Fillies as I was finishing up a family commitment), but here are this year's Breeders' Cup winners and losers.
Loser-
Dortmund: I'm going to say it right off the bat, there are not going to be many losers on this year's list. However if there is anyone who deserves this more then anyone else then it is Dortmund. Everyone (including myself) thought he was the lock of the weekend and what does he do? He finishes fourth! So I have no idea what is going on with him, but it was not a good race.
Winner- Obviously: 5 times this guy has tried the Breeders' Cup and finally gets the win. Granted it was in the Turf Sprint and not the Mile, but now at eight this was likely his last chance to win.
Winner- Songbird, Tepin, California Chrome and Lady Eli: All four came in second in their races with two of them losing great breaking photo finishes and the other two not missing by much. Lady Eli especially the most heartbreaking considering what she came back from.
Loser- The "Songbird won" Conspiracy Theorists: Just give it a rest, the photo showed that Beholder got to the wire first, plus the NBC video was pretty good as well. You are just being a bit of a sore loser.
Loser- Victor Espinonza: After having one of the best Breeders' Cup's last year with a win in the Classic and a runner up finish in the Distaff, his BC this year was a nightmare with a 4th in the Distaff and depending who you talk to a bad ride on California Chrome.
Winner- Beholder: To the doubters who thought that she was finished... well you can shove it! Not only did she beat Songbird on the nose (for reals), she was able to get back her title as Queen of the Fillies. I'm so glad that she was able to go out on a win, something that four of the past five super fillies (Rachel Alexandra, Zenyatta, Blind Luck and Royal Delta) have not, with a win (Havre de Grace won in New Orleans for her career finale).
Winner- Unbridled: It wasn't like last year where his great-grandson won the Classic, but it was maybe even better. First his granddaughter Champagne Room stunned everyone with her amazing Juvenile Fillies win, then his another one of his great grandsons Classic Empire wins the Juvenile. To top it off his grandson Arrogate runs down Chrome to win the Classic.
Winner- The Zip Brothers: Ah Ghostzapper and City Zip, sweep the dirt sprints as a broodmare sire (Zapper) and as a sire (City).. that is all.
Winner- Gio Ponti: To those who where counting him out as a sire... well you can stuff it now he has a BC race winner! That is something that Street Sense, Hard Spun, and Curlin can't say.
Winner- Tiznow: A Mile winner thanks to Tourist and you could say that Arrogate had a Tiznow like rise. He came out of nowhere to win the Travers by an eye popping margin.
Winner- Medaglia d' Oro crossed with a granddaughter of Forty Niner: Lets see Rachel, Songbird and now New Money Honey who won the Juvenile Fillies Turf. The latter is out of a full sister to Any Given Saturday, which means her broodmare sire is...
Winner- Distorted Humor: The KING OF FORTY NINER STALLIONS! That's right Funny Cide's dad won 2 races as a Broodmare sire. Here is a horse who was the Leading Freshman Sire of 2002 (thanks to a Dq of an Elusive Quality son) got a Derby and Preakness winner in 03, a JCGC winner in 04, went on a cold streak, a Belmont winner in 2010, a Classic winner in 2011 (Drosselmeyer for both of those two races), grandsire of a Derby and Preakness winner in 2012 (I'll Have Another). He's had an amazing career. Not bad for a dirt miler.
Now here are a few Early Eclipse Predictions:
2yo Male: Classic Empire (after years of West Coast dominance, the East Coast 2yo's are back!)
3yo Male: Arrogate (the 3yo males where a mess, but I hope Gun Runner gets on the finalist list with the Classic winner and Exaggerator, but it will likely be Nyquist (yuck!))
3yo Female: Songbird (should be unanimous)
Older Female Dirt: Beholder (Distaff win overcomes her 3 loss streak)
Older Male Dirt: California Chrome (best year for the older males regardless)
Male Sprinter: Drefong (don't be surprised though if Lord Nelson gets it)
Turf Female: Tepin (this may be a tight vote between her and Lady Eli though)
Turf Male: Flintshire (Turf winner Highland Reel will likely make it close though)
Horse of the Year: Chrome (not a fan, but I'm not that stupid)
