Freshman Watch 2016: Eye of the Leopard

Name: Eye of the Leopard
Year Born: 2006
Color: Bay
Sire: A.P. Indy
Dam: Eye of the Sphynx
Broodmare Sire: Smart Strike

Race Record: 24 starts 5 wins, 3 seconds and 3 thirds
Earnings: $920,517

Stakes wins: Plate Trial, Queen's Plate

Standing at Calumet Farm

Profile: Eye of the Leopard didn't make first start until 3 but made an impact on his 3rd start where he won the Plate Trial. Next time out he would run down Mr. Foricos U to win the Queen's Plate the most prestigious race in Canada. Finishing third that day would be Milwaukee Appeal who was the Woodbine Oaks winner. He would never win another stakes race after that, but did finish third on conventional dirt in the Prince of Wales which is the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. Also picked up the Sovereign Award as 3yo Champion Male.

Here is his Queen's Plate win:

He would also pick up 3rd place finishes in back to back years in the Valedictory Stakes at 4 and 5.

Sire: A.P. Indy is considered to be one of the greatest stallions ever. A son of Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, Indy emulated his father by winning the Belmont as a 3yo and tacked on a Breeders' Cup Classic win for good measure. As a sire he has had many great champions including Bernardini, Rags to Riches and just last weekend with Honor Code.

Dam: Eye of the Sphynx won the Woodbine Oaks and 2 other stakes races in her career while finishing second in the two other legs of Canada's Triple Tiara. As a dam she also has stakes winner Hotep and G2 winner Deceptive Vision. She is the 1/2 sister to stakes winner Quiet Cleo (the dam of G1 winner, Sovereign Turf Male and Horse of the Year winner Quiet Resolve). This is the same female family as stakes placed Forever Classic.

Broodmare Sire: Smart Strike of course is a G1 winner in his own right and half brother to the wonderful Dance Smartly. Other then being sire of both English Channel and Curlin, he has Lookin at Lucky and My Miss Aurelia who like the other two mentioned are Eclipse champions.

Preferred Surface: Eye of the Leopard's wins where on synthetic. His dirt starts weren't bad, but nowhere as successful as he was on synthetic.

Potential Success: Top 40 with most of his success on synth and in Canada. If his Canada based foals get on a roll I wouldn't be surprised to see one or two of them nominated for Sovereign Awards.
