Dear Rachel of the Past,
Several years ago there was a colt by Indian Charlie who you didn't like named Uncle Mo. It could have been because you preferred his stablemate Stay Thirsty who had a better pedigree, or the fact that his owner Mike Repole was basically a younger version of your own father. You thought that he was an overrated horse who wouldn't turn out to be a great sire, especially at Coolmore where he stands considering the firepower they had with Giant's Causeway, Fusaichi Pegasus and Tale of the Cat.
2015 comes around and Uncle Mo is a freshman sire. He has a two G1 winners in Gomo and Nyquist, the latter being undefeated during his 2yo season and earning championship honors. His stud rights are sold to Darley and is sent to Florida for bonus money reasons instead of prepping for the 2016 Kentucky Derby in California. You thought that he would lose to Mohaymen who is out of one of your favorite mares Justwhistledixie. Turns out you where wrong there too.
This past Saturday, Nyquist shut down any doubters he had when he won the Derby over Exaggerator whose own sire Curlin was third in the 2007 Derby to a 2yo champion in Street Sense and Hard Spun both who will be future stallion mates of Nyquist. It was the second win for his owner, trainer and jockey (Paul Reddam, Doug O'Neill, and Mario Gutierez), however they did not bring their Hall of Fame pony (Lava Man) this time around it was another former racer named Satire who was the pony. Up next is the Preakness, while I personally still have my doubts about a Triple Crown this year, it would not surprise me if he where to win all 3 races.
It could be a fun summer though for the 3yo's.
Sincerely,
Rachel of the Present
Ps. Do not underestimate Cathryn Sophia again... after all she has Team Smarty, Alex and the brother of a former DE Park jockey on her side.
