Before California Chrome, American Pharoah, Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta, there was Unbridled's Song. He had a very good career with wins in the BC Juvenile, Florida Derby and Wood Memorial. It was at stud though where he shined. Although he did pass down injury problems, his foals didn't disappoint. Especially BC race winners Unbridled Elaine, Unrivaled Belle, Midshipman, Liam's Map and Derby runner up Eight Belles.
Today in the Travers, one of his final foals Arrogate not only won the race, but he made the rest of the field look silly and set a track record at the same time. American Freedom was second and Gun Runner was third. UBS' regular rider Mike Smith rode Arrogate and he is trained by Bob Baffert who of course was heartbroken last year when Pharoah came up short. The winner is owned by Juddmonte who owned a great son of Unbridled themselves in Empire Maker and a little bit of irony the broodmare sire Distorted Humor is the sire of EM's arch rival (and my all time favorite horse) Funny Cide. It was a great day for them as they also won the Sword Dancer with Flintshire.
The Travers wraps up a great 2 Saturdays for Mike as he won the Alabama last week with Songbird.
In other races:
Cavorting showed that she can go 2 turns in the Personal Ensign.
Drefong could be like his broodmare sire Ghostzapper as he won the King's Bishop.
A.P. Indian stamped himself as the sprinter to beat in the Forego.
Lady Eli returned to the races after defeating laminatis and ran a gallant second to Strike Charmer in the Ballston Spa.
