A few days ago, there had been rumblings that he had passed away. This was confirmed by a check on the Jockey Club database.
Jockey Club's registration site says there is a death report completed for Materiality. Anyone know anything about that? pic.twitter.com/Y7wGbaDHCE— Carly Kaiser (@carlykaiser) September 30, 2016
It turned out that his death was in July according to the following tweet.
Alto Racing lost a very special friend today. Materiality had the most resilient heart. He'll always be our champ. pic.twitter.com/pjrO650LfK— Connor Harrell (@ConnorHD20) July 26, 2016
How anyone missed this, I'm not sure. However, this is where things turn weird by the following two tweets.
Bloodstock agent Steve Young and breeder John Gunther have confirmed that Materiality died in September. No details on his death, however.— Jeremy Balan (@BH_JBalan) October 1, 2016
Clarification to previous tweet. Gunther said Materiality died "about 10 days ago." Young did not say when the horse died.— Jeremy Balan (@BH_JBalan) October 1, 2016
This contradicts the July tweet. This leads to many questions:
When did he really pass away?
Why say it's a "long story"?
Why no comment despite multiple attempts to find out what happen?
Why lie considering the first tweet was in July?
Regardless what we know is that he has passed away and that his death reporting should have been handled better by his owners. However, at least we know what has happened to him considering many former Derby horses get thorough the cracks and we don't hear about them again afterwards.
RIP Materiality
Update: This article clears things up a bit still, no excuse
